I just don't get it...

The other day I saw on tv that for like $350, or something like that, you can send 2 Ethiopian Jews to Israel to the "promised land." If these are poor Jews, why the hell would you send them to Israel? Is there a job and house waiting for them? Wouldn't the $350 be better spent on food, shelter, clothing or medical care? These people claim you can help them to a better life, but aren't things a little tense in Israel right now? Maybe I'm stupid, but this just doesn't make sense...
