Recently, more like a week ago, I started a vegetable/fruit garden. Well, actually you couldn't call it a fruit garden, as I've only planted strawberries and they're not showing any signs of wanting to grow.
So, what possessed me to start said garden? Well, having borderline high cholesterol, I figured now was the time to change the way I eat to help lower it and prevent any future heart disease. Going into the grocery store and buying fresh fruit and veggies can get pretty expensive. Canned veggies have way too much sodium in them, defeating the purpose of eating them. They're basically high blood pressure in a can. Frozen is good, but for all that, I can grow my own and freeze them, which lead me to starting my little garden.
When we bought seeds to start our garden, it probably would've helped to read the packets. It probably would've helped to know that the pumpkin seeds we bought grow 6ft tall and a 100+lb pumpkins. If I plant these in my yard, they'll take up the whole thing. Said pumpkins have not been planted, as I don't know where exactly to plant them. I've figured out spots for the corn and watermelon, yes watermelon, but I just have to motivate myself to get out there and dig the spot up.
So far, I've planted okra, strawberries, broccoli, bell peppers, and tomatoes and the only thing not cooperating is the strawberry plant. The okra and broccoli were planted on Monday with some flowers and with all the rain we've had the past few days, they are already starting to grow. I'm pretty excited because I've never had a green thumb and if things keep going as they have been, I just may actually grow something for once.
Stay tuned to see how this whole garden thing goes...
