For as long as I can remember, I've been a collector. I've collected all sorts of things, like little ceramic shoes, books, movies, and just random junk. All things that took up a lot of space in my house. Recently I was talking to someone about people who collect things and she brought up two good points...what do these things really do for us? (nothing) How much pleasure do you get from these things? (very little)
That conversation got me thinking about how much stuff do I have that I really don't need. Is it really necessary to buy something based on the fact that it's available in your favorite color? No, but I'm guilty of it. Shit, I'm looking at the jacket now. I'm an impulse buyer and it doesn't matter how much I need it or how much pleasure it will bring me, I'll buy it and regret it later.
There comes a point in time when all the collecting and needless buying has to stop and I guess that point is when you start to think that one day you'll be on a future episode of Hoarders. So, I'm challenging myself to two things: 1) to start thinking before I buy something and 2) get rid of the things that I don't need. I firmly believe that once I get rid of the clutter, I can regain control over my life. It's not going to be easy, but it wouldn't be a challenge otherwise...
