I've always had it in me to be aware of the consequences that our actions have on our Mother Earth. (And yes, planet earth is female because when this woman gets pissed, she does so in the form of hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc. What man has that kind of fury???) So, I try to be green when I can be. I have tons of reusable shopping bags, mostly because I have to collect a bag from every store I go to. It's doing little things that I hope will make a difference. I'm very aware of global warming, but one thing bothers me. Polar bears.
Why is it that these cute creatures are being the poor, innocent victims of global warming? I read somewhere that global warming (as well as habitat loss) is their biggest threat. The key danger they face with habitat loss is malnutrition or starvation. Polar bears are also drowning because they are using all their energy stores to swim over further distances. If you wanna know more, read more, but the point I'm trying to make is this: global warming is fucking it up for the polar bears.
The other day I saw an infomerical from the Global WWF about polar bears. I love polar bears. If I had a tank big enough, I'd have one in my backyard no matter how much it cost to keep it. According to the WWF for $16 a month you can help a polar bear. I'm baffled. How is me giving them $16 a month going to help a polar bear? Are they gonna send freezers to the Arctic to make more glaciers so they have more room to live? Exactly what does $16 a month get you??? It gets you a t-shirt, a stuffed polar bear, and a framed certificate and photo. As if you'd need another damn t-shirt when the poor polar bears are dying. And how can I be sure that the photo they send me will be of the exact one I'm helping???
In all honesty, I'd just want the WWF to please let us know how this $16 a month is really going to be spent because I'd want my money to go the polar bears and not the blue-footed booby.
That's some deep thinking. Now I want to know how my $16 can help save a bear!
ReplyDeleteI think the $16 goes towards producing all those free bears you get with your "donation"
ReplyDeleteThat's not saving the polar bears! I think I'll go hand $16 to a polar bear and save the foundation the trouble.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of taking the adoption process a bit further, like going to a judge and getting custody of a polar bear cub and swimming with it in my pool.
